He was very reserved, very dignified, a very private person.
Mable John
I won't see it, but you'll see it down the line. These guys (The Rolling Stones) are gonna change the industry. This song is gonna take you- You'll be a part of history. He was right. He was always in the future.
Bobby Womack talk with Sam on the Stones cover of the Valentinos 'Its All Over Now'
I was quite in awe of what a sort of gentleman he was. But when he went onstage, he was a man in his own complete and utter style. He really just hypnotized-with his hands, his voice, I can't stop using that word, he hypnotized the audience.
Jet Harris
He walked out as easy as anything, like somebody preparing to tell those people his life story. There was nobody to touch Sam.
Don Arden
Sam was a prince of a man.
Aretha Franklin
He told me "Just listen to people talk. That's where you get you hooks".
Bobby Womack
He just stood there flat footed and rocked them. He didn't have to do nothing but sing.
Lloyd Price
Let Sam in. This is the world's greatest Rock 'n' Roll singer.
Cassius Clay in the boxing ring after defeating Sonny Liston
Willie could be in a rage sometimes, and Sam would just walk up to him and basically not say too much, but just Sam's presence would settle him down. They had a lot of respect for each other. And he and Sam had fun.
Mable John on Sam's and Little Willie John's relationship
He had a wonderful way with the audience.
Dionne Warwick
Man, you're killing me. You got me coughing up blood. What did you do? Sam started singing million sellers after million sellers on my butt.
Jackie Wilson
Sam was more than me. Sam was a thinker. He could see the whole picture.
L.C. Cooke
He made you think you were the only person in the world. In one night.
Allen Klein
We had a full black history library before black history was even talked about or known.
Linda Cooke
He gave you the feeling he was really glad and blessed to be Sam Cooke.
Etta James
It feels like death.
Bobby Womack when Sam asked him about 'A Change Is Gonna Come'

My favorite quote about Sam from my friend Jerry:
"Sam was the best singer who ever lived, no contest. When I listen to him, I still can't believe the things that he did. It's always fresh and amazing to me; he has control, he could play with his voice like an instrument, his melisma, which was his personal brand -I mean, nobody else could do it-everything about him was perfection. A perfect case."

That's a great quote. Sam's voice like an instrument...what a great description of his voice. It really was dynamic and full of soft, but yet strong power.
